Ulrika Nilsson, MS’06

After Long Island University (LIU), I moved from the US to Canada to work for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Convention on Biological Diversity-Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The Protocol is an international treaty governing the movements of living modified organisms (LMOs), commonly referred to as genetically modified organisms (GMOs), resulting from modern biotechnology from one country to another. It is a complex and controversial issue for many people.

My position as an Associate Information Officer for the Protocol is similar to a journalist or a communication specialist. I have to write materials such as press releases, outreach strategies, reports on public awareness, exhibit materials, statements, brochures, newsletters, web updates and more. I also organize side events, fairs, webcam filming, database information and communicate with as much people as possible to raise awareness. I had to train myself, understand the issues and write clearly in a timely manner. Think of the research paper you had to write. Building on the experience from LIU and my former employment, I now have a much better ability to produce textual and visual information about UNEP in Canada.
