The United Nations in the 21st Century: Views from Within

Professor Jacques Formerand, Director

Long Island University’s Institute for the Study of International Organizations offers a Certificate Seminar for students undertaking an internship at the United Nations and its affiliated organizations.

The broad purpose of this seminar is to familiarize participants with the inner workings of the United Nations by bringing them together with practitioners of international organization and diplomacy. It is designed to complement an academic understanding of the United Nations with an appreciation of the day-to-day concerns and realities of the world body and an appreciation of how problems are identified, addressed and (sometimes) resolved.

To achieve these objectives, United Nations officials and representatives of governments, civil society and the private sector discuss a wide range of substantive issues of current concern to the U.N. The common themes underlying these discussions are institutional change and adaptation to evolving functional tasks, with a particular emphasis on the actors and processes involved.
